It’s the first week of January and we know how depressing it can feel. The excitement of the Christmas holidays are fast fading, it’s ages until Easter and even longer until the summer break. Life is full of long dark nights, cold wet weather and even ice and wet snow. So we thought why not brighten the mood and help you plan your next road trip adventure this year. From any western European base, all these destinations are easy to do in a 2 or 3 week break, longer if you have time. Plan your next road trip adventure and it might just give you that spring in your step to get you through the January blues.
Quarter 1 Road Trip – Embrace the Cold
From now through to March, it’s usually dark and damp in Europe, so embrace the cold and darkness and head up to the Arctic Circle to see the northern lights. The colder the temperatures, the better chance you have to glimpse a sight of this amazing wonder. If your truck is not equipped for comfortable accommodation at temperatures as low as -50c, put on some snow rated tyres and plan to use the well-equipped chalets of Scandinavia. Joining the Youth Hostel Association will save you a few pennies too.
Here you can go ice fishing, take a skidoo adventure, bob along on a reindeer or dog sledge and there’s a vast network of snow covered tracks to try out your snow driving too.
Quarter 2 Road Trip – Bring Forward the Summer Heat
Around the Easter period is the best time to visit the Sahara Desert. Watch out for the occasional dust storms in March. The temperature is perfect at this time of year for camping in the dunes. We love Tunisia and it’s still possible to cross the Sahara to the oasis at Ksar Ghilane. It might be possible to get clearance to travel further south, although we would caution going too near the Libyan border these days. Ferries run from Marseilles and Genoa on a bi weekly basis.
Alternately, head to Morocco. Erg Chebbi and the route to Tiznit via Erg Chigaga is readily accessible to anyone with a 4×4. There’s plenty of open desert, tracks and few local guides to help you out if you need it.
Quarter 3 Road Trip – Escape the Tourist Madness
Summer in Europe is busy at most campsites, with some Italian resorts fully booked up already. Tourists descending on the region in mass isn’t everyone’s idea of a great holiday. So why not drive east into Eastern Europe and experience the wonders of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia or Bulgaria? The weather is glorious yet tourism is relatively low key, particularly away from the beach resorts of the Adriatic coast and the Black Sea. All the campsites and their swimming pools are open and of course the food, copious amount of beers and plenty of off-road driving opportunities just make this an ideal destination.
Quarter 4 Road Trip – Fend off the Winter
If you have to wait until Autumn for your break, then prolong those summer days and nights with a visit to the northern region of Spain and Portugal. Again, there are a great many tracks through the wilds of both countries and the scenery is awesome. Many campsites are open and of course there are plenty of foods and drinks to try as the harvests are gathered and every village has a festival or two.
So there you have it. If you have only 2 or 3 weeks a year to go on a road trip adventure, there is something for everyone in every quarter of the year to try. There are so many destinations to choose from. You don’t even need a 4×4 to get away from the maddening crowds. Have you still got that sluggish January mood or are your ideas of this year’s adventure starting to formulate?
Here’s to a happy 2016 and stepping off the tour bus. Creating your own road trip adventure has never been easier. Let us know your plans and we’ll see if we can give you any hints and tips for the region.
