Better late than never! Almost an entire month into 2016 already and we’ve finally made some decisions about the next stage of our overland adventure. After 2 years on the road, we know that overland travel plans never go as expected. To create an itinerary is simply a waste of effort so our first decision is to have no plan. What we do have is a few goals for the rest of the year. Only time will tell how much of this we achieve. So here it is, our 2016 travel goals….
In the next couple of weeks we finally leave Morocco. It’s been a fantastic 3 months but in the last 2 years we’ve spent almost 7 months here. Morocco is a great destination, particularly for overland travellers. Just check out our Morocco Travel Guide to see just how easy it is and what the country has to offer. For us, it’s time to move on.
Our 2016 Travel Goals
We’re progressing north into Europe, intending to travel east over the next few months. We’ll travel very slowly to begin with. It’s almost February and far too cold to travel too far north. We’ve become wimps in our old age! Here’s a few of our 2016 travel goals for the countries that await us….
Salvador Dali Fest in Girona, Spain
We’ve travelled through our fair share of Spain but with it being such a huge country, we’ll probably never see it all. I’m a massive fan of Salvador Dali. I’d really love to see the Hallucinogenic Toreador in the flesh but that’s currently located in Florida, USA as are quite a few of his original works. So off to Girona we go. I’m so excited and hope to see the original Galatea of the Spheres and check out the multiple Dali attractions in the area.
Millau Viaduct, France
France is so expensive to travel through as an overlander. We’ll probably transit through fairly swiftly and where possible, avoid the toll roads. Aside from the food and wine, which of course we’ll indulge in, Graham wants to see one of the greatest ever engineering achievements, Millau Viaduct. I’m not convinced that’s overly exciting though.
Stelvio Pass, Northern Italy
This one’s for Mowgli. She just wants to drive it and looking at the images, you can see why!
Slovenia Road Trip
We only spent a few days in Slovenia back in 2014 and the weather was cold and wet. This time, we want to explore more of Slovenia and everything it has to offer the overland traveller. We’re hoping to do a pretty comprehensive tour including Bled, Ljubljana and the Julian Alps.
Explore the Balkans
We enjoyed our time in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia enormously and looking back, feel like there was so much we didn’t get to see. This year, we aim to explore Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania at a slow pace. Even Prince Charles is planning on visiting the region this year and if it’s good enough for royalty, it’s good enough for Mowgli!
And then what?
Well maybe we’ll explore the off road side of Greece. Maybe we’ll tour Turkey. Maybe we’ll keep going towards the Stans. Maybe, maybe; so many maybes. To decide now would start to sound too much like a plan and the truth is, we don’t know. We’ll just see what happens as the miles pass by and we keep an open mind and a somewhat open wallet. Nervously checking bank balance…
